12:25 pm - A message from Karnage's Owner
|
Karnage passed away today at the age of 6 years and just over 10 months.
For those who didn't know, he was diagnosed with a tumor in his intestine about a week ago. The tumor was removed, and it appeared he might recover. Unfortunately, he took a turn for the worse this past Friday, and had to go back to the vet's. Up until this morning, it appeared that he was starting to get better, and there was hope that we would be able to bring him home again, but when the vet techs came in to check on him this morning, they found that he was gone.
I am leaving this LJ up for a while as a bit of a memorial to a very special rabbit. He was loved by all who knew and met him, and I hope those who read his posts here enjoyed him as well.

1:07 am - Wow, has it been that long?
|
Got bored while out of the cage, so I decided to come here and do a bit of updating. Didn't realize it had been that long since I posted, but hey, I'm a rabbit; we just don't get that urgent need to tell everyone what we're doing like you humans do.
Anyway, the Big Floor Debate ended a few months ago, and as always, I got my way.
Well, sort of--no more mats, but Owner spreads a couple of old sheets out for me so I don't have to use the floor. Sometimes she'll even put a couple of towels down for me to stretch out on, which is always nice when I want to relax after a few tunnel runs.
Just went through a big shed, which was not fun at all. Owner said she'd never seen me drop so much fur at one time. I blame the weather; it's been cold one day, warm the next for months. How's a rabbit supposed to maintain a decent coat if he can't count on some continuity from Mother Nature?
Owner has come up with something new for my cage; a nice hay bed. It's been a trial-and-error process, mainly because she seems to think I should be eating the hay and not sleeping on it. She also wasn't too happy when I tried to mark it like I do all my other stuff. She said rabbit pee and cardboard don't mix; I said that's not my fault. She finally came up with a plastic box that works quite well. It holds an entire bag of hay, which provides me with a nice large space for lounging. She said she'll take some pictures for me to put up here when she gets a chance. I'm in no hurry; I'm not crazy about that flash-thing she uses anyway.
Owner's looking to have a tattoo of me done as soon as she gets the time and the money. She had an online contest to see who could come up with a good picture of me for her to use. The winner was LJ poster pixie_bee and this is the winning picture:

I must admit, I am seriously flattered. I always knew I was a handsome devil, but this just confirms it.
Owner also did a slideshow for the contest ( which can be seen behind the cut )
Again, damn I look good.
Anyway, I think that pretty much covers anything of interest for the moment. I need to remember to noodge Owner about updating my webpage to include the slideshow and a few new pictures and stuff.
For now, though, I need to get back to my workout. Keeping these good looks at my age is pretty important, you know.

1:36 am - Where's my mats?
|
Well, I'm back in the kitchen, but for some reason, Owner's got my cage on top of one of my mats, and the other one is missing. I like my mats; they're soft and comfy, especially when I feel like stretching out for a bit. Floors aren't soft and sometimes, they're too slippery (although Owner assures me that this floor has plenty of traction so I can hop around all I want).
I tried staying in my cage to protest the lack of mats, but Owner took me out anyway. I showed her, though; I stayed on the edges of the mat that was under the cage. She tricked me a couple of times with my tunnel and treats, but overall, I managed to stay off the floor. She finally gave up and let me go back into my cage, although she left the door open in case I changed my mind and decided to explore.
Owner says I'm going to have to get used to the new floor if I want to come out, because she's not hiding it under mats. Needless to say, I am not happy about this. We rabbits like our routines, they make us feel secure. She says there is no reason I can't get used to a new routine, and that she wouldn't ask me to change if it was unsafe. That's true, but I still don't like it, and she can't make me like it.

11:47 pm - A little moving around
|
It's been a really crazy day. Owner took me out of my cage today for what I thought was going to be the usual cage-cleaning, but when she put me back, I realized that something wasn't right. I did a quick sniff around and realized that my cage was not in its usual place; I have been moved into the room where the computer is. Owner says this is a temporary move because a new kitchen floor is going in tomorrow. I do remember her mentioning something like that happening, I think I even posted about it here, but for some reason, I guess I wasn't expecting to be moved in here. Usually, Owner puts me in her bedroom when I can't be in the kitchen, but she said the cage was too big for that.
I actually like this new setup; I can see Owner at the computer, so I know what she's doing. I'm also nearer to that "AC" thing that keeps the house cool, although it made me sneeze a bit at first. (Well, it was either that or all the dust Owner and The Big Guy were stirring up while they were clearing out the kitchen.) Owner covered part of my cage with my play sheet just to be on the safe side, so all is good now.
I don't know what putting a floor in a kitchen is all about, but I guess I'll find out tomorrow. Apparently it might involve a lot of thumping, because Owner has promised me that she'll take me into the bedroom in my carrier if the noise bothers me. That's good of her; nothing I hate more than thinking there's danger and it's just a false alarm.

2:15 am - Out of the loop
|
Apparently Owner was having some problems with her website, which meant problems with my site as well. She says everything's taken care of now. I went to my webpage and checked it out. Some of the fancy stuff's no longer there, but Owner promises me that when she gets the time, she'll put up my videos to make up for it.
Owner says we're getting a new floor installed in the kitchen, and hopefully I'll like it enough so she won't need to have the mats down on the floor when I'm out. I like the mats, they're really comfortable when I want to stretch out and relax. I'll give the new floor a try when it's in, but I'm not making any promises.

1:28 am - Damn, I need to remember to post in this thing
|
Yeah, I know, it's been a while again. Not really much for a rabbit to talk about, my days are generally pretty regular. I wait for Owner to wake up and feed me, then I lounge around for the day, maybe lick my salt lick, drink from my water bottle. At night, I play with my jingle ball and see who will come out and pet me or talk to me. Occasionally, Owner lets me out for a nice run. After that, it's lights out until the next day. I like the regularity of it all, although once in a while Owner like to throw me for a loop by either giving me a manicure or cleaning out my cage. I hate it when she rearranges my stuff, although once I get used to it, it's okay. I think she went a little overboard with the shredded paper tonight, though. I thought I was getting buried alive for a second, but once I did a little digging and rearranging, it was all good. Not sure if I like the new litter Owner's got below deck, it's really flowery-smelling. I don't think Owner likes it much, either, but she's only got herself to blame for buying it. Ah, well, at least it's under my cage and not in it.
The Kid's been sneaking me some bread once in a while. Owner stopped giving it to me a few years ago because it was making me poop all over the place, but she says that as long as he only gives me a little once every couple of weeks, it should be okay. Man, did I miss bread! Owner says she needs to get me some more hay. That's something else I haven't had in a long time. I'd better be careful, though--all these new treats could make me a fat bunny in no time.

1:08 am - New digs
|
Y'know, I really wish Owner would consult me when she's looking to make improvements on my living arrangements. This afternoon, I'm chillin'in my cage wondering how I can charm Owner into giving me some more yogurt drops, when she comes into the kitchen carrying a bigass box. She opens the box, dumps what looks like a bunch of metal on the floor and starts fiddling around with it. I didn't exactly pay much mind to what she was doing (I'm used to her swearing and fiddling around with stuff) until suddenly she starts pulling my cage out from its usual spot. Usually, this means it's cage-cleaning time, so I wasn't exactly thrilled, but the next thing I know, I'm getting taken out of my cage...and popped into this OTHER cage!
I was completely stupefied--and pretty damn annoyed as well. I thumped as loud as I could thump at Owner to let her know it, too. She told me to get over myself, it'd be just fine, then she left to fetch the Kid.
While she was gone, I gave the place a sniff. New cage is square, old cage was rectangular. I've got a little more headroom, and what I lost in cage length is made up for in width. There's a new water bottle, which I'm not sure I like, but Owner promised me she'd put the old one back if it doesn't work out. All of my toys are in the new cage, and Owner put in a new straw mat for me to lie on. All in all, it was okay, but I was still a little weirded out. This cage is on LEGS, and I just didn't like looking down at my litter pan; it seems so far away now. Plus my old cage smelled like me, this one smells like nothing. I decided to curl up on my straw mat and wait for Owner to come home. Maybe she'd notice I was unhappy and put my old cage back.
Owner did check on me as soon as she got home, and she did notice that I wasn't exactly happy with things as they were. She said she knew what would make things better. She brought out another box--the one with my shredded paper in it, and put a bunch in the cage. Then she put a yogurt drop in my food dish.
Surprisingly, that DID work. The paper hides my view of the floor, and it's fun to play with, so I feel better. I was even feeling good enough to toss the jingle ball around a bit.
Owner says she's not exactly thrilled with some parts of the new cage (the door opens the wrong way, and there's nothing to block any accidental spraying in my pee zone), but it'll do. I'm in agreement. The big test will be the next time she lets me out for a run. I might need some stairs to get back in.
I just hope the next time she gets it in her head to modify my living arrangements, she'll consult me beforehand.

1:00 am - Yeah, it's been a while
|
I know, I know, haven't posted in forever, but what can I say? I'm a busy rabbit.
Found a new addiction--Kaytee berry-flavored yogurt drops. DAMN, are they good! If Owner would let me, I'd eat an entire bag, but she says I can only have 2 a day--maybe 3 if I behave myself when I'm supposed to, like when she clips my nails and whatnot. (Normally, something like that would piss me off, but these drops are so good, it's worth putting up with the manicure.)
The drops are now part of my morning routine. Owner empties my food dish and refills it, then gives me a drop to eat and puts one in my bowl with my food. I'm an impatient rabbit, I'm usually climbing into her lap to get at the bag of drops. One of these days, I'll get that bag, but so far, she's been too fast for me.
It's also been corn-on-the-cob season again. Damn, that's good stuff. I would eat it every day if I could, but Owner only lets me have an ear every so often. She says it'll make me sick if I eat too much. I say at least I'll go with a smile on my face.
Otherwise, it's pretty much same-old-same-old. Eat, snooze, play with the jingle ball, go for a run in the kitchen--all good stuff.
Now, if I can just convince Owner to give me some more drops...mmmmmmmmm, drops.

11:57 pm - It's that time of year again
|
Much as I love rabbits being the center of attention at Easter, it annoys the hell out of me when humans go out and buy baby rabbits to give to kids as an Easter gift without ever taking the time to figure out if the kids can actually handle taking care of a rabbit.
We're not TOYS, you morons.
If you want to give a cute bunny to a kid, give them a stuffed bunny, not a real one. Real rabbits require proper feeding, housing and care just like a dog or a cat would. We're not always cuddly little bundles of fur, either. Some of us are downright nasty, especially when we're being pawed or getting our tails pulled by a little brat who thinks we're just like a stuffed bunny.
Oh, and by the way, there's a big difference between domestic rabbits and wild rabbits. Pet rabbits like myself are DOMESTIC rabbits; we have no experience fending for ourselves, we have no clue as to how to defend ourselves from predators or how to shelter ourselves from the elements. Wild rabbits know where to get food, they know how to dig themselves a hole or warren, they know what a coyote or a bear or a bobcat look and smell like, and they know how to get away from them if possible. If you release it into the wild, a domestic rabbit does NOT become a wild rabbit--it becomes a hot meal for the first lucky predator who finds it, if it hasn't died of starvation or frozen/baked to death or been hit by a car first. There's been way too many rabbits who have met a gruesome death because some idiot decided to "send Mr. Whiskers back to the wild" rather than take care of it. If you've been dumb enough to get a pet you can't handle, do the smart thing for once and take it to a damn animal shelter so it can get a proper owner.
Ok, enough ranting on my part. Here's some positive stuff instead.
The Columbus House Rabbit Society runs an annual campaign encouraging people not to buy rabbits as Easter gifts. It's called "Make Mine Chocolate". If you love rabbits, I encourage you to go to the MMC website, http://www.makeminechocolate.org/, and show your support by buying a MMC chocolate bunny pin or magnet for $5, or even some raffle tickets at $1 each. If you can't show your support financially, at least spread the word; stuffed bunnies are good Easter gifts, not real bunnies.

2:15 am - Strange things you humans do
|
You silly people--for some reason you get all loopy when the year switches over. I have no idea why, it's just the start of another year, no big deal.
My people are apparently no exception; I thought I was getting my usual quiet night in the kitchen until The Kid decided he needed to play "Hide the Rabbit" with me. He kept tossing my towel over me and waiting until I had gotten myself out, and then trying to toss it on me again. I managed to dodge him most of the time, although I didn't really mind when it landed on me as long as I could get myself out. Owner was busy trying to keep The Big Guy awake until midnight. I don't know why she even bothered, it's not like much of anything was going on then--all I could hear was a lot of "Happy New Year" and people cheering on the TV. Big furry deal--although I must admit, the New Year's treats I got were much appreciated.
Happy New Year to one and all.

12:38 am - It's not the having, it's the getting
|
Apparently it's that "Christmas" time of year for humans. Not that I'm complaining, mind you, since Owner gave me a bunch of new stuff; three kinds of snacks, a bunch of the flavored salt licks that I love so much and some new bunny shampoo. I haven't decided if I like the snacks yet, although they are fun to scatter around my cage, and Owner has yet to try out the bunny shampoo on me, but I'm psyched about the salt licks. Those things are damn tasty, especially the carrot and corn flavored ones.

12:01 am - Help rabbits in need

I'm truly a lucky rabbit; I've got a family who loves me, a comfortable home and all the food I could ever want. However, there's lots of rabbits who aren't so lucky, and they could use the support of rabbit-loving people like those of you who might read this LJ. Here's a few sites where you can either make a donation or buy cool stuff (and the proceeds will go towards helping rabbits in need):

2:02 am - I feel pretty, oh so pretty
|
This was a first; got a bath in November.
A real bath--with actual bunny shampoo!
I was feeling kind of itchy today. Dunno why; I'm not going through one of my usual sheds, and it's not like I'm getting any exposure to fleas and ticks like some poor animals I've heard about. I guess Owner noticed me scratching a bit, so she gave me a once-over, then decided to give me both a pedicure (to keep me from tearing my skin open, she said) AND a bath afterwards.
The pedicure was an unwelcome event (although I'll admit it was pretty much necessary, the nails were getting long), but the bath was a huge surprise. Owner never gives me a bath when it's cold outside, she worries that I might get sick. I guess the concern over the scratching outweighed that, though, because next thing I know, I'm in the sink and getting warm water all over me. I'm used to cold water, not warm, but that's okay--it actually felt pretty good, kind of warmed me up some.
Then I hear her asking The Kid to "get the bunny shampoo".
Bunny shampoo?!
Never had bunny shampoo on me before--and I'm not sure if I want it on me again. Sure, it did make my skin feel good (and DAMN if my fur doesn't look mighty good), but the stuff smells awful. Owner and The Kid weren't too crazy about the stink, either; they said it smelled like "baby powder", whatever that is. Once they rinsed it off me, though, it wasn't too bad.
Afterwards, Owner used up a bunch of towels rubbing me as dry as possible. I'm surprised she didn't take off half my fur in the process, but the rubdown did feel good.
I was hoping she'd leave me some baby carrots as well, but she mentioned something about me needing to cut back on them because I've gained some weight. Dammit, I'm not fat, it's just my fur got all fluffed up, that's all.
Feh, I'm gonna toss the jingle ball around some.

5:10 pm - Things to do while your cage is being cleaned
|
Owner's busy cleaning my cage, so I figured I'd get on here and do a quick update. Not that there's all that much to write about; we rabbits live a really simple life--eat, run about (when possible), toss the toys around, nap. I'm still off-limits to the people room, but Owner says she'll let me in there when she's got the time to let me have a good long supervised outing. The no-bread diet has improved matters somewhat, but Owner says it's probably best I stay off the bread entirely and just stick to veggies, pellets and hay. (I think she's just keeping me off bread because she can't eat it herself.)
Time to head back to the cage--I'm not crazy about the lack of proper bunny odor, but at least there's a new straw mat to sit on.

2:22 pm - Nobody knows the trouble I've seen...
|
This is not my month.
First, Owner puts me under house arrest again because I can't resist "marking my turf" in the people room. (they get to leave their smells everywhere, why can't I?) She actually shooed me out of the people room the other day when I managed to get in there; I was highly annoyed. She left the cage door open so I could wander around the kitchen if I wanted, but I decided to just stay in the cage; if I can't run around the way I want to, hell, I'm not going anywhere.
Now she tells me I'm going to have to do without my nightly slice of bread for a while. I guess she's got a good reason for doing that, because it turns out that I've got a nasty case of the shits. I didn't know it (hey, we rabbits don't give a shit about our shit, y'know what I mean? You humans are way too obsessive about that stuff.) , but apparently I'd been leaving a bit of goo behind me every time I sat on the kitchen rugs. Cecum's not supposed to be runny, so Owner went to the House Rabbit Society's web page and looked up how to treat it. Turns out that I need more hay, greens and fresh veggies--and less bread, so there goes the bread. Don't get me wrong, I'm loving the extra hay and the dish of carrots she's already given me, but it's just not a good night without a nice slice of potato bread to nibble on.
I suppose it could be worse; she's already said that if the change in diet doesn't improve matters, I've got to see the vet. I guess I'd better hope that a carrot a day can keep the vet away.

11:31 pm - They're home!
|
My people are back! Yay!
Of course, I didn't let THEM know how happy I was to see them; gotta play it cool, y'know. Not that living with Owner's sister was such a bad deal, but it just wasn't the same. For starters, she wouldn't let me anywhere near the people room, and you know I've got to have access or I'm just not a happy bunny. She DID give me lots of treats, though, so it's all good. Owner let me out for a house run once they all got settled in; boy, did it feel good to really stretch the ol' hind feet.

11:21 pm - They're up to something, I just know it
|
I think my people are going away again; I keep hearing them saying things like "packing" and "rental car" and "Maine", which sounds a lot like traveling to me. Owner's been extra nice to me lately, giving me all kinds of treats, which is making me suspicious as well. Also, Owner's sister and her mom came over to the house last night, and I kept hearing Owner talking about me to them, which usually means that Owner's sister is going to be taking care of me. If they are going away, that's cool with me (as long as they're not gone too long); I enjoy the peace and quiet. Owner's sister is really nice, too; she doesn't give me any trouble.
I managed to sneak behind the couch today; even got a chance to mark the corner before Owner caught me. Needless to say, she wasn't happy about it, so I had to get my toenails clipped as punishment(I HATE getting my nails clipped, I'm always afraid she's going to lop off a toe or something). It wasn't all bad, though; she also gave me a nice, cool bath, which gets rid of some of the loose fur I'm shedding(I hate shedding time almost as much toenail-clipping time).
I've discovered something really yummy lately; this stuff called "corn on the cob". Owner's been giving them to me lately, and they're quite tasty. Not as good as the big pile of radish greens I got last night, but pretty darn close. You people should try some sometime.

11:38 pm - Routine changes
|
The Kid's around a lot more than usual these days; I'm not sure exactly why. I don't mind him being here; he's good for the occasional scratch behind the ears and a little body massage (although he's not as good as Owner is), but it kind of disrupts my general routine. Normally, Owner lets me out when she gets up, I run around the house a bit, do my love dance for Owner (aka running around and around her legs and grunting--don't laugh, women love it when I do that), have a little breakfast, then stretch out on the mats and mellow out a bit until it's time to go back to the cage. When The Kid's here, though, it's not so peaceful; I have to dodge his big feet when he's walking around, and he's always crabbing about the bits of cecum (cecum = ABC rabbit food, kind of like cow's cud) I leave around in the kitchen (like it would kill him if he actually had to look where he stepped for a while, sheesh).
Ah, well, I suppose I can deal with it; Owner says it's not for very long.
He'd better watch his step, though, or I'll pee in his slippers.

5:50 pm - And the years roll on
|
Turned 4 today; hardly seems possible.
Kind of scary, too, because in rabbit years, 4 is middle-aged, and I'm not exactly crazy about the possibility of having already lived half my life. I'm in damn good shape for a rabbit my age, though; I eat right and get plenty of exercise, so I'm thinking I should live a good long time--maybe even past a decade.
Got some good birthday stuff from Owner; a new toy and a new bowl (filled with radish greens, too--yum!) She also gave me a couple of handfuls of hay to chew on. I think we're going to go back to the hay manger; the hay ball is fun to toss around, but it's tough to get the hay out of it. Also, I'm starting to run out of room in my cage with all the toys I've got in here, so I think Owner's going to keep some for when I'm out of the cage.
The Big Guy's sick in bed today, so I'm hoping Owner will let me out tonight for a late-night run. I love cruising around the house at night; it's fun to go exploring in all the shadows. I'm more of a night-rabbit anyway; being out during the day is cool, but I have more energy in the evening, plus I don't have to worry about The Big Guy or The Kid tripping over me or stepping on me.
Okay, enough chat; I've got some leftover radish greens to finish. See ya!
